So, we may define the nature of ethics as scientific. A moral code is a set of abstract principles; to practice it, an individual must translate it into the appropriate concretes—he must choose the particular goals and values which he is to pursue. The notion of obeying one's conscience tries to do it (since then one only has to see what troubles or does not trouble one's conscience), as does the application of "The Golden Rule" and, in many cases, the application of Adam Smith's principle of enlightened self-interest.

At some point in man's history he became aware that his body is composed of numerous different organs.
