Paderewski, to whom Elgar's Polish fantasia is dedicated, wrote his Symphony in B minor, op. 24 and gave it the name "Polonia" as well. I am hard-pressed to hear similarities between those two.

Invited to a formal luncheon as a great national figure at the time of Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, an invitation he had moreover previously accepted, he sent his regrets, saying, "You would not wish your board to be disgraced by the presence of a piano-tuner's son and his wife." You need to prepare yourself before seeing a Wagner opera. Nevertheless, there is a warmth and generousness which might be thought slightly offset by a lack of authority in his climactic "Jesu! by that shuddering dread…".

The theme is presented in three brief sections. On that note, while I am not surprised to see almost all of my favourite British composers living or dead absent from this poll (and will not make you add them) I am quite surprised to note the absence of Edmund Rubbra, one of the few "conservative" British composers I immensely admiremore so than Britten or Vaughan Williamswhose Fourth Symphony I am listening to at this very moment. edit: and who was added to the poll while I was typing this post, lol Are you familiar with Arthur Benjamin's turbulent and moving only Symphony, per chance?

Elgar stands on the shoulders of Berlioz, Wagner, and Liszt, from whose influences he has freed himself until he has become an important individuality. These recordings were reissued on LP record in the 1970s and on CD in the 1990s. Thus there began for him a strong association between music and nature. Elgar was of enough consequence locally to recommend the young composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor to the Three Choirs Festival for a concert piece, which helped establish the younger man's career. [n 10] Elgar was catching the attention of prominent critics, but their reviews were polite rather than enthusiastic.
