Fêtes explodes with some wonderfully vital playing and the recording exposes every detail analytically, like a newly cleaned painting. In 1827, he attended a performance of Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet where he became infatuated with Harriet Smithson, an actress in both performances, whom he later married. This period was not without its own emotional struggles, though, because of his painful and difficult separation from The Five and the increased popularity of Tchaikovsky’s works brought on by his increased public appearances with the composer. Thus Mlisande's second line, Ne me touchez pas o je me jette a l'eau (literally: Don't touch me or I'll throw myself into the water) is given in the Schirmer libretto as No, no touch me not or I shall throw me in, which, in order to preserve the rhythm, not only sacrifices the grace and ease of the original for a stilted awkwardness but utterly distorts Mlisande's disarmingly nave and plain-spoken character.

This does not mean that La mer was Debussy's one experiment with the language of the Franckian symphony. and then full-bloodedly restates the chorale motif of the first movement's coda. he uses modest levels of recapitulation in the second for structural turning points. A good tip would be to 'practise' away from the piano, by running through the piece in your head, with your score, and hearing it the way you want it to sound, so when you get back to the piano, you know what you want to produce.

He wrote approximately 650 songs in the sixteen years of his career. That last, the storm, is the thread between each movement; trembling strings convey the calm before a storm and the anxious wait as we prepare for it. Around this time, Debussy met Erik Satie, who proved a kindred spirit in his experimental approach to composition and to naming his pieces.
